Durch hygienisches Essen und Trinken und konsequenten Mückenschutz können die meisten z. T. auch gefährlichen Infektionserkrankungen wie Malaria und Durchfälle vermieden werden.Der Krügerpark und die nördliche Küstenebene der Provinz Kwazulu-Natal sind endemisches Malaria-Gebiet. In letzter Zeit nehmen Malaria-Erkrankungen, insbesondere die “Malaria Tropica”, deutlich zu. Weitere nur durch Mückenschutz vermeidbare Erkrankungen kommen vor.

Für die Malariaprophylaxe sind verschiedene verschreibungspflichtige Medikamente wie Malarone, Doxycyclin und Lariam auf dem Markt erhältlich. Die Nebenwirkungen bzw. Unverträglichkeiten mit anderen Medikamenten sollten unbedingt vor der Einnahme einer Chemoprophylaxe mit einem Tropen- bzw. Reisemediziner besprochen werden. Bei Einreise aus einem Gelbfiebergebiet ist Impfschutz gegen Gelbfieber nachzuweisen (Ausnahme: Kinder, die nicht älter als 1 Jahr sind)

Empfohlene Impfungen

Schutz gegen Tetanus, Diphtherie, Polio , Typhus und Hepatitis A, bei Langzeitaufenthalt über drei Monate auch Hepatitis B. Bei besonderer Exposition (Landaufenthalt, Jagd, Jogging u.a.) kann Impfschutz gegen Tollwut sehr sinnvoll sein.

Die verminderte Ozonschicht in der Atmosphäre über der Antarktis zwingt zu entsprechender Sonnenschutzvorsorge (täglich Hinweise in den südafrikanischen Medien).

Die medizinische Versorgung in Südafrika ist sehr gut. Die privaten Krankenhäuser in den großen Städten haben europäisches Niveau, die staatlichen Krankenhäuser sind dagegen überlaufen und leiden unter Budgetkürzungen. Die ärztliche Versorgung ist in den ländlichen Gebieten nicht so gut wie in den großen Städten. Das Leitungswasser ist gesundheitlich unbedenklich, wenn auch nicht besonders wohlschmeckend.

Südafrika hat eine hohe und auch weiter schnell steigende Rate der Immunschwächeerkrankung AIDS. Dies ist beim persönlichen Verhalten im Land dringend zu berücksichtigen.
