Der Benzinpreis liegt momentan, in Kapstadt, für einen Liter (95 Oktan) bei ca. 7,23 ZAR (ca. 0,66 Euro*). Benzin wird am Mittwoch, in Folge des Oelpreises und des schwachen südafrikanischen Rands auf 7,64 südafrikanischen Rand (ca. 0,70 Euro*). Unter anderem die Preissteigerung des Benzins ist mit der grösste Preistreiber im Jahr 2007 in Südafrika gewesen, was zu einer Inflationsrate von 8,6% geführt hat.

Am gestrigen Abend, des 1. Februar 2008, um ca. 20.40Uhr schaltete Eskom, der stattliche südafrikanische Energiekonzern, fast gesamt Kapstadt vom Netz. Sea Point, Mouillie Point, Gardens, Tamboerskloof, Woodstock, bis zum Stadtteil Rondebosch und die Innenstadt von Kapstadt waren bis weit in die Nacht ohne Strom. Das Land wächst in einem so enormen Mass, dass Eskom Probleme hat die nötige Energie zu erzeugen. Südafrika kann nicht auf andere Länder zurückgreifen um Engpässe, bei der Stromlieferung, zu überbrücken. Es ist zum Beispiel in Europa üblich.
