Vor drei Jahren noch war ein Liter 95 Oktan für unter 4 Rand zu bekommen. Vor einer Woche stieg der Benzinpreis erstmals über 8 südafrikanische Rand pro Liter. Leider ist das noch nicht das Ende der Preisspirale! In drei Wochen, am 2. April 2008, steht ein weiterer Anstieg bevor. Diesmal wird der Preis um 60 bis 65 südafrikanischen Cent steigen. Somit kostet 1 Liter 95 Oktan jetzt 8,10 ZAR ( 0,66 Euro*) und in ca. 3 Wochen wohl 8,70 ZAR (0,71 Cent*)! Für Europäer ist der Wechselkurs eine gute Gegenbewegung zu den Preissteigerungen in Südafrika, da der Rand zum Euro an Wert verloren hat. Diese Woche erst kostet 1 Euro = 12,50 ZAR. 2006 im März kostete 1 Euro nur 7,25 ZAR. Das macht eine Steigerung der Kaufkraft um 58 %, nur hat die Inflation das auf ca. 20-25% gedrückt.
